AN EVENING STORM

Lightning flares in darkest night,
A sudden streak of jagged light.
A distant boom of rolling thunder,
Cleaving evening stillness asunder.

Rain begins its soft patter on windowpane,
Relaxing minds and easing their strain.
Patter becomes tapping, then tapping driving blows,
As gentle ally alters form to relentless foe.

Again the thunder booms, angry strident shout,
As storm clouds deepen and winds swirl about.
Clutching with invisible fingers, grasping what they might,
Then ripping and hurling their prizes on this storm tossed night.

Raw, elemental power is loosed on this dark moonless night;
Eldritch forces prowl freely just beyond mortal sight.
Forces of chaos rule the air, wreaking havoc while they may,
Only to slink away like curs at the coming advent of day.
